PLATE. Paillasse [Clown]. Bone china plate with multi-color floral and pictorial border (incorporating the head of a jester) and a central image of a harlequin dancing between a royal crown and a phrygian bonnet on the ground, with a man in the background with cups and balls. The inclusion of the crown and bonnet gives a political overtone to an otherwise innocuous image. 8 inches in diameter (21 cm). With the stamped mark of Creil et Montereau on the verso. France, 19th century.
