Codognato was a leading Italian poster designer whose career and style spanned from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. In all, he produced over one hundred and fifty posters, creating images for many of the most prominent Italian companies including Campari, Cinzano, Fiat, and Pirelli. This poster was originally designed in 1904 and was reused regularly in subsequent years. Many Italian posters are designed so that the large areas of text were placed at the bottom on a separate sheet of paper, allowing them to be changed every year. This image depicts a dramatic view of the heads of two magnificent animals, in a stunning selection of colors. Promoting a horse show, one of the animals is depicted with a harness, the other without, an indication of the diversity of the show. The backdrop is the skyline of Verona. Manifesto p. 93 (var).
