POLA R. GAUGUIN
Autoportrait.

Oil on canvas, double-sided, early 1900s. 520x470 mm; 20 1/2x18 1/2 inches. With a Symbolist scene in oil, verso.

Pola Gauguin (1883-1961), the fifth of Paul Gauguin's (1848-1903) five legitimate children, painted this work as a tribute to his father, the seminal Post-Impressionist painter. The self portrait shows the artist surrounded by his father's well-known Tahitian paintings, on the right is Femmes de Tahiti, 1891, now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, while the verso composition speaks to Gauguin's Symbolist connections. In addition to painting, the younger Gauguin was an active art critic and scholar; he lived with his mother, Mette Sophie Gauguin, in her native Copenhagen from the early 1890s onward, after Paul Gauguin's departure and self-exile in Tahiti.
