Latin translation by Niccolò Perotti of Books 1-5, and epitome by Wolfgang Musculus of Books 6-17. 8vo, 162x103 mm, contemporary English brown calf gilt with single fillet border and azured arabesque centerpiece on covers, spine in 7 compartments, with leather lettering piece in one, azured ornamental tool in 5, and cross-hatched blind fillets at top and bottom, front joint just starting at either end, few stains on rear cover; light dampstaining in lower outer corner of opening leaves, minor soiling on title, front free endpaper lacking. Principal contemporary history of the rise of the Roman Empire, composed in the 2nd century B.C., influential for its account of the Roman mixed constitution and system of checks and balances. Perotti's translation of the only fully preserved portion was originally published in 1473, and the partial epitome by Musculus in 1542. The extant Greek original text first appeared in 1609.
