PONTING, HERBERT (1870-1935)
The Terra Nova at the Ice Foot, Cape Evans. Silver print, 6 5/8x4 3/4 inches (16.8x12.1 cm.), tipped to the original mount, with Ponting's signature, in pencil, on print recto. 1911

Additional Details

Ponting was the official photographer for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The photograph of the Terra Nova was taken in Antartica before Ponting left the Polar party to return to London in order to prepare his photographs for exhibition. Ponting learned of the deaths of the Terra Nova crew members along with the rest of the world in 1913, nearly a year after they perished.
