Porter (1847-1923) was born to a free African-American family in Hartford. An active painter from 1865 to 1915, he studied in Paris 1881-1884 Thanks to the sponsorship and patronage of Mark Twain. He specialized in fruit and floral still life painting and was one of the first African Americans to exhibit at the National Academy of Design He shared a studio with Gustave Hoffmann, who had to sell Porter's paintings for him because no one would believe that the paintings were by a black man. despite his talents, he had faded into obscurity by the time of his death. Only recently has he been recognized as one of the leading American artists of the late 19th century.
