30 October 1865: ". . . I learn that a coalition of Democrats and Republicans who will support Mr. Johnson will probably be formed to elect a speaker, who will favor conservative action. Raymond (the turncoat), as likely to carry strength and influence in case New York goes for Democracy (by hopes of reward), may be selected. Otherwise Colfax will be the successful candidate of the radicals. Banks has no chance. . . ."
18 November 1865: ". . . Grant is having an oration here. This recourse, simple & apparently unambitious, fails not to attract invidious remarks, and the insinuation that he is looking for the Presidency. . . ."
