James A. Porter (1905-1970), artist, art historian, author and educator, studied at Howard University, Columbia Teacher's College, and the Sorbonne. His early works were exhibited by the Harmon Foundation from 1928-33; the American Watercolor Society in 1932; the Corcoran Gallery in 1933. He was awarded the Schomburg Portrait Prize in 1933. His works were part of The Negro Artist Comes of Age (Albany, 1945), and the Negro in American Art, UCLA, Wright Galleries, 1965. He authored the definitive Modern Negro Art (1943).<
