Originally formed to compete for hosting the 1996 Olympics, the Bay Area Sports Organization Committee (BASOC) was kept alive to compete for the 2012 games as well. In addition to the 12 images they commissioned along the "Bridge to the Future" theme, they also commissioned this design by Primo Angeli, whose previous contributions to Olympic graphics include the official 1996 Atlanta Olympics poster and an ice skating poster for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
