Additional Details

The fourth Strassburg edition, with translated and revised text by Wilibald Pirckheimer using the notes of Johannes Regiomontanus. The maps comprise 27 ancient representations according to Ptolemy and 23 "modern" maps. With the exception of the fifth Ptolemaic map of Asia, are all printed from the same woodblocks used for the Gruninger publication of 1522, themselves reduced versions modeled after the 1513 Waldseemuller edition. The modern world map by Laurentius Fries is one of the earliest maps in a Ptolemaic atlas on which the name "America" is used. Phillips, Atlases 362; Nordenskiold Collection 2:208.
