Palm Leaf Manuscripts.
Two Examples.

19th century.

A large palm leaf manuscript, consisting of 12 lacquered leaves elaborately decorated with red and gold; over the decoration the leaves are inscribed in large, thick black lettering, mostly on both sides, two holes drilled in each leaf; with red and gold decorated and lacquered boards (small chips to lacquer and paint on leaves; lacking string); 21 x 3 3/4 in. Likely an example of a Burmese Buddhist, Kammavaca.

[Together with] A smaller palm leaf manuscript, consisting of 28 leaves with text delicately etched into both surfaces of each leaf; bound together with string running through holes in the leaves (not unlike venetian blinds) thereby attaching the leaves to the red and gilt-painted boards; 16 1/2 x 2 in.
