Paris, François-Edmond (1806-1893)
Souvenirs de Jérusalem.

Paris: Arthus Bertrand, circa 1862.

First edition, oversized folio; title page with mounted color lithograph showing the plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher; illustrated 14 with color and tinted lithographs by Gaildrau, Hubert-Clerget, Fichot, and Bachelier after Paris's drawings; illustrations followed by explanatory text; bound in publisher's full red morocco decorated with gilt Maltese crosses and blind ruling, nicely preserved (small area of insect activity affecting the surface of the title page near the imprint, with slight worming affecting the outermost margin of the first plate); 24 3/4 x 19 in.

Paris entered the French navy at the age of 14 in 1820. He studied painting with other naval artists and was successfully trained to deliver accurate and lively images of ships and battles, a skill he uses here to bring us into the inner confines of the treasures of Jerusalem.
