Partly Printed Document Accomplished in Manuscript, in which a Negro woman seeks a writ of "Homine Replegiando" against a white defendant. One page, oblong folio; Signed by a local official; docketed on verso. Washington County, PA, 18 March 1799

Additional Details

"Homine replegiando" is a common law writ that runaway slaves were able to employ when captured on free soil. They asked the court to return them to their freedom or release them from unlawful imprisonment. Jane, the woman in this case, was probably a run-away slave, but may have been transported by her owner to Pennsylvania. This type of legal document is rarely encountered.
