The North Pole.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Co., 1910.

First American edition, large quarto, inscribed by Peary to Virginia's State Geologist Thomas L. Watson in ink on frontispiece verso; illustrated with photographic frontispiece, eight color plates, folding map and numerous text illustrations; publisher's navy cloth stamped in gold, vignette of explorer with dog sled and American flag stamped in red, white, blue and gray, teg; frontispiece and a few other color plates with some foxing and offsetting, map chipped at outer edge with two-inch split to interior crease; a touch of rubbing to extremities; ex libris Thomas L. Watson (1871-1924), who served as State Geologist of Virgina and Head of the Geology Department at UVA; 9 3/8 x 6 1/2 in.

Peary's miraculous journey to the Pole, which he claimed to reach on April 6, 1909, and his speedy journey back to the ship has been continually questioned over the last century.
