Peterson, Jane (1876-1965)
Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice.

Circa 1910.

Gouache on gray wove paper, signed lower right; 462 x 445 mm; 18¼ x 17½ in.

During the early 1910s, Peterson mastered painting in gouache, a medium that allowed her to completely finish her works while painting en plein air. She was profoundly inspired while on a study trip to Europe in 1907 and decided to stay. She continued her studies at the London School of Art, and then returned to New York in 1913 where she was active at the Art Students League. Peterson contributed to American Impressionism, taking the movement in new directions.
