Picasso, Pablo (1881-1973)
The Masterpiece Guernica, Exhibition Catalogue.

New York: Published for the Valentine Gallery, 1939.

Limited edition catalogue, quarto; with a double-page reproduction of Guernica and three other black-and-white photographic plates; bound in original printed wrappers, with the sponsors list laid-in at front (edges of front wrapper toned); 10 1/4 x 8 in.

The tour of Picasso's Guernica was arranged by the American Artists Congress for the Benefit of the Spanish Refugee Relief Campaign. Painted in 1937 to protest the bombing of civilians in the Basque region of Spain on 26 April 1937, this particular moment in the Spanish Civil War became a flashpoint for many, including the artist. As a rallying cry and public fund-raising event, Picasso sent the work out on tour. This rare exhibition catalogue commemorates a New York stop. Sponsors of the effort included Ernest Hemingway, Rockwell Kent, Georgia O' Keeffe, Eleanor Roosevelt, Fiorello LaGuardia, Gilbert Seldes, Carl Van Vechten, and many others.
