Pino, Paolo (1534-1565)
Dialogo di Pittura.

Venice: [Comino da Trino for] Pauolo Gherardo, 1548.

First edition, small octavo, woodcut printer's device to title page; bound in modern parchment over boards; printed in italic type; 5 7/8 x 3 7/8 in.

The Dialogo unfolds between two learned Italians, Lauro and Fabio. Their discussion of beauty in art and nature leads to musings on drawing and painting. They agree on the need for accurate perspective and proportion and the nobility of drawing. Pino was a painter in his own right, based in Venice, whose school he touts as superior to that of the Florentines. Many important artists are mentioned in his work, including Leonard da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Michelangelo, Dürer, and others.
