Potter, Beatrix (1866-1943)
The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit.

London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1906.

First edition, oblong 12mo, with "London & New York" on rear cover, potentially a variant issue not described by Quinby with the title for The Story of Miss Moppet printed as the title page; illustrated with fourteen color plates separated by leaves of text all folding out accordion style; slight fading only to the green border of each page; original pale green publisher's wallet-style cloth case stamped in dark green, upper cover with pictorial label within a ruled border, silver design mimicking a clasp and lip, pale lavender endpapers printed with white; a bit scuffed with a few light stains to lower board, pastedown split at inside edge of tongue, ink ownership inscription inside upper flap; 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 in.

The tale of this thieving rabbit was written for publisher Harold Warne's daughter Louie Warne after she requested from Potter a story about a bunny with less admirable qualities than those of Peter Rabbit. The manuscript subsequently given to Louie was bound by her father in wallet form to match the published copies as offered here.
