This is the opening novel in Powell's Dance to the Music of Time cycle, a twelve-volume roman-fleuve considered one of the longest English-language works. The series, originally inspired by a Nicholas Poussin painting of the same name, is considered a hallmark of English literature and has been adapted both for television and radio productions.
