Procedure - Installation and Removal of Mercury Astronaut's Pin. A ten page instruction manual for Gordon Cooper on "prank" procedures to install or remove the official astronaut lapel pin. Methods include use of "M-108 (heavy lift) crane, two large bouncers for handling astronaut, and a 5-foot oak 6x6 for beating on 3.1.4. (Carpenter!). Caution and warnings: "Astronaut may require forcible restraint upon observing" the listed steps for pin placement. "Excessive forward pressure (during pin placement) may result in loud screams and violent agitation of astronaut..." Communication requirement: ear plugs if "operating within 10 yard radius of astronaut". During procedure, "screams of astronaut are to be disregarded". San Diego: General Dynamics Astronautics, 1963

Additional Details



A classic "gotcha". Astronauts were awarded a gold pin to replace their silver pin after completion of their first space flight.
