Purchas's compendium of travel accounts is organized in four parts, describing geographical and theological histories of Asia, Africa, America, and Islands adjacent to America. Not merely a collector of tales, Purchas is an accomplished storyteller in his own right. "Now are wee shipped for the New World, and for new Discoveries. But seeing this Inkie Sea, through which I undertake a Pilot's office to conduct my Readers, is more peaceable then that which on the back-side of this American World, was called the Peaceable, by Magellane, the first discoverer." Purchas inspired S. T. Coleridge's Kubla Khan.
