Pushkin, Alexander (1799-1837)
Eugene Onéguine.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1881.

First edition in English, octavo; inscribed by the translator, Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Spalding, "with compliments," in ink on the half title; bound in publisher's green gilt-stamped cloth with black coated endpapers (majority of leaves unopened, some spotting at ends; text block cracked in one place, corners and spine caps bumped); 7 1/2 x 5 in.

A pillar of Russian literature, this translated edition marked the first introduction of Pushkin's masterpiece to an English-speaking audience. Lieut. Col. Spalding's rendition of the poem was deemed faithful to the original Russian, and remained the authoritative English translation for more than fifty years.
