Dedicated in 1930, Randolph Field in Texas was known from the start as "The West Point of the Air," and later became the headquarters of the Air Corps Training Center. Pilots were trained in the basic and primary phase of flying and returned for instructor or combat crew training. In 1941, the term "flying cadet" was changed to "aviation cadet" just prior to the enormous expansion of the cadet program during World War II.
