This multi-layered piece by contemporary artist shows Radcliffe Bailey's early interest in exploring a contemporary form of historical painting. This work typifies his early interest in the history, portraiture and movements of African Americans --from the African Diaspora to the Northern Migration-- with non-narrative assemblages, combining photographic images with traditional and non-traditional material, including acrylic resin, encaustic and glitter.

Born in Bridgeton, NJ, Bailey received a BFA from Atlanta College of Art in 1991, where he lives and works today. His work has been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Tate, Liverpool, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. His work today is found in many institutional collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Nasher Museum, Duke University and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
