This multi-layered piece by this fascinating contemporary artist demonstrates Radcliffe Bailey's interest in finding a contemporary form of historical painting, and is his first wall installation to come to auction. This work typifies his early interest in the movements of African Americans and Africans over bodies of water--from the African Diaspora to the Northern Migration with non-narrative assemblages, combining images, surface, traditional and non-traditional material, including acrylic resin, encaustic and glitter.
Born in Bridgeton, NJ, Bailey received a B.F.A. from Atlanta College of Art in 1991, where he lives and works today. His work has been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Tate, Liverpool, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. His work is in many public and private collections, including the Columbus Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
