RAFF ON LISZT RAFF, JOACHIM. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient ("Dear Friend"), in German, concerning a preface he intends to write for a publication containing adaptations of Bach's fugues by an unnamed composer, comparing the virtuosity of Liszt on the piano with that of Paganini on the violin, arguing that the German school's focus on musicality and the Italian school's focus on technique prepared the way for Liszt's "revolution," and concluding that Liszt's triumph was in giving expression to symphonic polyphony and homophonic lyric, and sending an article by himself [not present] on related matters. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet; few short closed separations at folds repaired with tissue, few scattered small stains, evenly toned. Weimar, 27 December 1851
