RAIN-IN-THE-FACE; CHIEF OF THE LAKOTA. Photograph Signed, "Rain in the Face," cabinet card portrait by George E. Spencer, showing him seated wearing a headdress and holding a pipe. Signed in pencil on the verso above an inscription in another hand, also in pencil: "for / Wy B Read / 950 W Chicago Ave / Worlds fair 1893--." Photographer's imprint on the mount at bottom. Approximately 5 1/2x4 inches (image), approximately 6 1/2x4 1/4 inches overall; minor scattered soiling on verso. [Chicago, 1893]

Additional Details

By 1893 the great warrior had participated in the Fetterman massacre, had been captured by Custer and escaped, and survived the Battle of Little Big Horn. Then he was reduced to being an attraction at the World's Columbian Exhibition.
