RALPH ALBERT BLAKELOCK
Wood's Edge.

Oil on board. 200x280 mm; 8x11 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto.

Blakelock (1847-1919) was born in New York City. Principally self-taught, he initially followed in his father's footsteps and studied medicine before pursuing his passion for art. Rather than spending time abroad in Europe to further his artistic career, as was his father's recommendation and the typical path for most American artists with the means to do so at the time, Blakelock sojourned through the American West from 1869 to 1872. His affinity for the Hudon River School is evidenced in his atmospheric and idealized landscapes, though his works are often heavier and moodier (Blakelock was plagued by psychological troubles throughout his career).
