Du Bois was born on Staten Island, New York, and had a prolific career designing for dance and theatre. He designed sets and/or costumes for over 40 Broadway shows.

Sons O' Fun was a Broadway musical with lyrics and music by Sam E. Fain and Jack Yellen, starring Carmen Miranda. The production ran on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre, from December 1, 1941 through March 29, 1943, followed by the 46th Street theatre through August 29, 1943.
