Kirchner, an Austrian artist, was enamored by Paris, having moved to Montmarte at the turn of the century. His output from this period is predominantly picture postcards, which were much desired in Europe and America. "His most beautiful postcards belong to this triumphant Parisian period in which the stylish features of the French Art Nouveau and the German Jugendstil come together with surprising results in representing even if with different situations and surroundings, an attractive and mysterious subject: that of the woman and her emotions" (Raphael Kirchner and His Postcards, Dell'Aquila). This was the poster for the Postcard show at the "Hall de La Plume," Paris 1900.
