The Pennsylvania Railroad commissioned Rau to take photographs and provided him with a specially-designed rail car. In 1901, the Railroad asked Rau to return to Horseshoe Curve, where the line crosses the highest point of the mountains. Rau built a customized panoramic camera, which could encompass an angle of 170 degrees.
