Additional Details

This print, which is believed to be unique, was acquired directly from the Rauschenberg Studio, circa 1988.

Collage-like and stark in contrast and form, this photograph by Rauschenberg exemplifies his recurring use of photography to both supplement and augment artistic projects. Around 1980, when he again took up photography (and when he may have revisited old negatives, and printed this image), Rauschenberg said "It [the camera] had heightened my desire to look. The constant survey of changing light and shadows sharpens all of the awarenesses necessary not only to make photographs, but functions as fertilizer to promote growth and change in any artistic style." Rauschenberg's eye, ever sharp and ever inquisitive, seems right at home behind the camera's lens.
