Parker (1922-1990) was an Abstract Expressionist painter who also is associated with Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction. Originally from South Dakota, Parker studied at the University of Iowa and ultimately earned his MFA there in 1948. From 1948 to 1951 he taught fine art at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. In the 1940s, his paintings were influenced by cubism. By the early 1950s, however, Parker became associated with the leading Abstract Expressionists of the time, including Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, and his style shifted. Like the modern artists Piet Mondrian, Stuart Davis and Jackson Pollock, Parker was a fan of jazz music; which combined with his interest in abstract expressionism, led to his individual painting style developed during the 1950s. Parker was also a great admirer of the work of Henri Matisse and his paintings of the 1970s and 1980s are especially indebted to Matisse's color and form. Parker later taught at Hunter College, New York, and was represented by the Samuel M. Kootz Gallery, New York.
