RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) DUNCAN YOYO. 1930.
31 3/8x23 5/8inches. Bedos & Cie., Paris.
Condition A.
Although he was active as a poster designer throughout his life, Gid is best known as a master French typographer. This poster is from his early period. During that era, all young, modern designers considered the Art Deco stylization as de rigeur. This poster is a rare example of a successful attempt to mix humor with the normally severe Art Deco style. Duncan yo-yos hit the market in 1929 and quickly became an international sensation. Gid's design, using only two colors, encapsulates the sheer joy of the toy through three intricate characters who are not only playing with them, but are living embodiments of the yo-yo itself. Their heads, with one large eye each, look like yo-yos and even the letters are dancing. This poster is a rare and wonderful gem of advertising. Raymond Gid 24.
