RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) EXPOSITION DU SAHARA. 1934.
231/2x161/4 inches. Publi-Graphique, [Paris].
Condition A-: creases and minor abrasions in margins. Paper.
Raymond Gid's career was divided between advertising and book design, both of which lead him to eventually become a master a typographer. In the early 1930's he founded the Studio Publi-Graphique with S. M. Dil (Louis Malavieille), whom he met at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1930 he became involved with the Ethnographical Museum at the Trocadero in Paris and went to Canada with the museum staff where he designed the poster for the exhibition that followed. He also became a member of the very select Explorer's Club, which may explain why he was asked to do this poster for a Sahara exhibition in 1934. The photo is by Pierre Ichac, a specialist of ethnographic photo and film. Gid did not sign the poster, which means the sober, rather uninspired typography would have been added later without his involvement. The poster is an interesting document of the early days of ethnography from one of the first French institutes to use photographs in its posters.
