RAYMOND TEMPLIER (1891-1968)

TOURNOI PIERRE GILLOU / AU STADE PIERRE DE COUBERTIN. 1958.

23½x16 inches, 59¾x40¾ cm. René Tanton, Paris.

Pierre Gillou was a tennis player, captain, then President of the French Tennis Federation and Racing Club de France. He was a key investor in the opening of the Roland Garros stadium. The Pierre de Coubertin Stadium, where the Pierre Gillou Tournament was held, was inaugurated in 1937 on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition, then rebuilt after the destruction of World War II. Raymond Templier also designed a stylistically-similar poster for the 1958 (printed 1957) Cannes Tennis Club's international tournament.
