In the 1890's Pal was one of the most prolific poster artists in Paris. He worked in practically every field, producing over 100 works. Rayon d'Or<>, (The Golden Beam) a gas light, is perhaps his most famous poster. The poster depicts a fairy-like, winged woman, draped in a very transparent shawl drawn to the welcoming glow from a lamp within a gold star. The light is reflecting off her naked body in such a sensuous and exciting way, that it seems curious a poster like La Traite des Blanches<> (see lot 102 ) was censored while this one was not. Paris was by no means a prudish city, but this piece goes far beyond the charming girls of Cheret. Weill, p. 48, Wine Spectator, pl. 129, Masters p. 32.
