A confidential listing of classified advertisements to connect customers to each other. Examples: "1384 (Montana) Howdy strangers, write." "1400 (Calif.) Handsome, butch, white, 26, seeks same." "1446 (Mass.) Black socks." The man placing the ad paid $1; the respondent could have his message forwarded for 25 cents. Readers' Service began as a classified section of the monthly magazine Vagabond, which launched in late 1963. Although this separately printed Readers' Service is billed as a monthly publication, no other examples have been traced in OCLC or at auction.
