This painting is from the artist's popular and much exhibited gospel/jazz singer series of the 1980s. Gene Whitfield was a jazz musician and contemporary of Gammon's. A memorial scholarship in honor of Whitfield is offered to outstanding Jazz majors at Western Michigan University, where Gammon taught for 21 years.
