REGINALD MARSH
Figure Study Class.

Pen and ink and brush and gray wash on paper, 1944. 274x408 mm; 10 3/4x16 inches. Signed, dated and dedicated in pencil, lower right and lower center recto.

While Marsh (1898-1954) may be best-known for his prolific 1930s-50s depictions of New York, he also worked for many years as an art instructor. Marsh returned to the Art Students League, where he initially studied drawing and painting, to teach beginning in 1935. He later became the head of the Department of Paintings at the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia. The current lot appears to be Marsh's take on a figure sculpting class, showing the oft-depicted theme of sculptor and model in the Art Students League studios.
