According to a letter accompanying this lot, "The subject was Mary Elizabeth Nicholls of Pittsfield, MA, an artist. She was in NYC on VE Day and no doubt, had met and/or studied with the artist. Paper used was from a pamphlet of an English art show that had been traced to Mr. Marsh in 1944." With an envelope addressed to the artist and dated October 10, 1944, and a receipt for the drawing, dated April 27, 1976.
