REID, JOHN. The American Atlas. Printed title-page and 21 engraved maps. Folio, 17x10 1/2 inches, contemporary calf over marbled paper covered boards with printed paper label on upper cover, worn, endpapers loose but present; sea coasts, lakes and rivers all attractively hand-colored in blue by a later, but early hand; a few maps with small splits at centerfolds, sheets uncommonly clean and nice. Early bookplate of Jonathan Harmer, Heathfield, Sussex, 1800. New York: John Reid, 1796

Additional Details

An attractive, unsophisticated copy of only the second atlas of purely American subjects to be published in the United States. Mathew Carey takes the distinction of the first, but Reid improves on Carey's work of a year earlier by including an adaptation of Ellicott's 1792 plan of Washington, D.C. That map, appearing here, is not found in all copies. Howes R170; Phillips Atlases 1216.
