REINHARD HOFFMÜLLER (1894-1958) MOHREN SCHLOSS. 1919.
28 3/4x37 5/8 inches. Harry Bunzel, Berlin.
Condition A.
By the age of 25, Hoffmüller was having lots of fun designing posters for the bars around Friedrichstrasse, one of the centers of Berlin's crazy nightlife. Typically his posters depict couples enjoying the various venues in the neighborhood, but several of his images are slightly more daring. Trueherz (see Swann Modernist Poster auction #2039, lot 9) shows only the heads of a couple, getting close over a cocktail glass. This image also takes a different approach as an insouciant waiter is licking some of the foam from atop a champagne cocktail. It was trendy during the era to have black waiters and servants working in restaurants and bars, and they were frequently depicted on posters. Hoffmüller, 36
