first american edition, inscribed and signed by the author in the year of publication in German in black ink on front free endpaper; additional inscribed note signed in pencil by author on blank leaf facing title page (also in German) confirming the present copy as a first edition.

Presentation copy to the daughter of filmmaker Carl Laemmle, German émigré, early Hollywood tycoon and founder of Universal Studios (Carl Laemmle, Jr., produced the film version of the book in 1930). The inscription (in translation) reads: "To Mr. and Mrs. Bergerman, with very heartfelt and friendly greetings in memory of beautiful days in Berlin." In unrestored, unclipped first printing jacket with "First American Printing / 100,000 Copies" statement on rear flap.
