REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Abraham Francen, Apothecary.

Etching and drypoint on cream laid Japan paper, circa 1657. 156x208 mm; 6 1/8x8 1/4 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's seventh state (of 10), with the slipped stroke on the left cheek; Usitcke's fourth state (l) (of 9); White and Boon's seventh state (of 10). Ex-collection D'Arenberg (Lugt 567, verso) and two unknown collectors, inscriptions verso. A very good, dark and richly-inked impression with burr on the frames on the wall, on Francen's right hand, on the left chair back and on the hat on the bench, most noticeably, though with more burr throughout, and with the landacpe through the window uninked. Bartsch 273; Biörklund 57-2; Hollstein (White and Boon) 273.
