REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print).

Etching, engraving and drypoint on Japan paper, circa 1643-49. 279x388 mm; 11 1/8x15 1/4 inches, small margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2), with the Baillie rework; Usticke's fifth state (of 5); White and Boon's second state (of 2). A superb, dark and richly-inked impression, with abundant drypoint and velvety burr.

The Irish printmaker, and army veteran, captain William Baillie (1723-1810), acquired Rembrandt's original copper plate for Christ Healing the Sick around 1775 and skillfully reworked many of the worn passages. After printing proofs from the reworked plate, many of them on Japan paper, like the current impression, Baillie cut the plate into four sections and made separate impressions of these as well. Bartsch 74; Biörklund 49-1; Hollstein (White and Boon) 74.
