REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Cornelis Claesz Anslo, Preacher.

Etching and drypoint on Japan paper, 1641. 185x155 mm; 7 1/4x6 1/8 inches, narrow to thread margins. The Baillie falsified first state impression, with the horizontal lines in the shaded triangular area to the right of the sitters left elbow. Biörklund's third state (of 4); Usticke's third state (of 6); White and Boon's second state (of 2), with the falsified blank strip along the lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce portrait with all the fine lines in the background and the dense cross-hatching distinct and with considerable burr throughout. Bartsch 271; Biörklund 41-J; Hollstein (White and Boon) 271.
