FROM THE MARIETTE COLLECTION REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Medea: or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa.

Etching and drypoint, 1648. 241x176 mm; 91/2x7 inches, thread margins. Biörklund's fourth state (of 5); Usticke's fourth state (of 5); White and Boon's fourth state (of 5). Foolscap with a 5-pointed collar watermark (Ash/Fletcher 19 K.a.). Ex-collection Pierre Mariette, dated 1698 (Lugt 567, verso). With additions in gray wash in the curtain folds upper right. A superb, dark and evenly printed impression with strong contrasts.

According to Ash/Fletcher, "States i-iv of Medea: or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa were printed in 1648 by a commercial printer and issued in book form the same year. That the impressions of Medea: or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa have the same watermark as a first state impression of Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road (Bartsch 217) dated 1650, may indicate that these particular impressions of Medea: or the Marriage of Jason and Creusa were printed later by Rembrandt himself." Bartsch 112; Biörklund 48-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 112.
