REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap.

Etching and drypoint, counterproof impression, 1640. 151x137 mm; 6x5 1/2 inches, narrow to thread margins. Biörklund's first state (of 3); Usticke's first state (of 3); White and Boon's first state (of 3); New Hollstein's first state (of 2), before the mezzotint rework. A very good and early counterproof impression, extremely scarce.

In printmaking, a counterproof is an impression taken from another just printed, which, by being passed through the press, gives a copy in reverse of the etching itself, and in the same position as that of the plate from which the first was printed. This proofing practice enabled Rembrandt (1606-1669) and other printmakers the ability to inspect the state of the plate and make any desired alterations. Bartsch 265; Biörklund 40-A; Hollstein (White and Boon) 265; New Hollstein 182.
