REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Self Portrait Frowning: Bust.

Etching, 1630. 60x61 mm; 2 3/8x2 3/8 inches. Biörklund's third state (of 3), though with traces of the 2 parallel horizontal lines printing above the head; Usticke's second state (of 2); White and Boon's third state (of 3). Partial foolscap (?) watermark. A very good, well-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with all the fine, delicate lines printing clearly.

According to Usticke, "A very scarce portrait, rarely fine (RR-)." We have found only 7 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years. The last impression sold at Swann, May 4, 2006, sale 2078, lot 44 (with an expertly-restored loss upper 3/8-inch of the print). Bartsch 10; Biörklund 30-M; Hollstein (White and Boon) 10.
